Designing a Montessori-inspired playroom for baby & toddler

March 19, 2019

I’ve been thinking about this room for some time now. I knew I wanted a low shelf that he can easily access but it also had to be wide enough to cover the space I wanted – which worked out to be 30” in height and 60” in width. I recommend measuring your space before buying anything.

Baby and toddler friendly shelves:

The tallest I would go is 30 inches. I think that’s a good height where your child can reach for items within the shelves, yet the top shelf can still be used as decor while they’re still young.

Wall decor ideas:

Don’t forget all of that precious wall space! This is a great place to hang pictures, artwork, DIYs and other cute wall decor.

From L to R:

When designing their playroom, try to get down at their eye level and see the room from their perspective. So far my goal was to have his toys accessible yet I wanted to add some decor touches that I can also appreciate while I’m in the room.

Here’s a sneak preview of our playroom:

[Before & after shots]

Before
This used to be my office, which I originally intended to turn into a cloffice.
After
Accessible shelves topped off with some decor.
Decided to add my succulents on a high shelf & out of reach.
His bookshelf is resting on our toy console for the time being. He’s at a stage where he’s pulling up on furniture so I don’t want him to hurt himself.
I added some floating shelves to include some wall decor that I can easily swap it out to freshen up the look of the room.

At 9 months, this shelf is the perfect height for baby J the middle shelf makes it easy for him to pull on up it and grab what he wants – just remember to anchor any shelving or large furniture to the walls to avoid it from tipping over.

That’s it for now!

I have a 2 year old. You mentioned 30inches as the tallest. If I have a 3 tier shelf. Would 30inches be the bottom?
